New agricultural machinery third level college course
A joint approach between FTMTA representatives, tractor manufacturer/distributor representatives and the Institute of Technology Tralee has resulted in the creation of a new third level course designed to meet the needs of the modern farm machinery sector and those seeking to enter the industry as service people.
The new course is a bachelor of science in agricultural mechanisation, which has just received final approval and it is a three-year programme leading to a Level 7 degree qualification.
The course is a direct entry programme outside of the CAO process and to apply for a place, potential students must have been accepted by a sponsoring farm machinery dealer who will provide the required work placements. Successful applicants will require at least five passes in the leaving certificate and three of those passes must be at least of C grade in maths, English and a science subject.
The course will be mix of college-based learning and work placement with the student required to carry out substantial online learning when on work placement, which will count towards the overall grades achieved.
FTMTA believes that this course will produce the high calibre of qualified personnel required to be agricultural technicians and encourages members to support the new programme.
Details of the application process will be on the FTMTA website and Facebook page in the coming days.
